Education and Counselling Centres

Counseling Centers are needed to tackle the specific challenges that the people living with T1DM face daily such as:

Lack of proper education and understanding on

o Diabetes complications and how to manage them

o How to correctly administer/inject and store insulin

o How to control diet and the importance of physical exercise.

Psychosocial issues such as

o Denial and Lack of self-esteem

o Suicidal attempts

o Stigma

o Relationship difficulties for the youth

o Discrimination at home, at school, and at work, since society Lacks awareness and understanding of T1DM.

The counseling centers will provide the following services to both T1DM youth, children, and their parents/caretakers;

• Professionally trained and experienced Medical personnel will provide counseling, education, and training on proper diabetes management including insulin injection techniques, insulin storage, healthy diet plan, and physical exercise.

• Peer to peer education and counseling from experienced and trained Youth leaders.

• T1DM awareness programs to the surrounding communities such as schools and office

The photo on the left shows the first Counseling Center for youth and children living with T1DM which was launched on 25th August, 2019. It is located close to the Diabetes Clinic, Muhimbili National Hospital, Dar es Salaam.

Our aim is to establish such centers at all 37 T1D clinics throughout the country so that each Tanzanian youth and child living with T1DM gets proper education and counseling.
